What are the VESA Standards and do they matter when buying a TV Bracket

The initials VESA stands for Video Electronics Standards Association. This is an international non-profit corporation, which represents more than 300 corporate members worldwide (typically made up from the TV/Screen manufacturers and the bracket manufacturers). The corporation promotes and develops timely, relevant, open standards for the display and display interface industry, ensuring interoperability and encouraging innovation and market growth.  The standards provide specific guidelines of the mounting hole pattern placement, screw size, and guidelines for the mounting pad or mounting apparatus to be utilised by equipment manufacturers based on a the size of the screen and monitor's weight.

Manufacturers of monitors have agreed on a industry interface standard, which means a hole pattern on the back of the monitor, screen or display that fits any mounting device whether for VESA wall mounts, desktop or ceiling mounts.

  • For small screens up to 22.9" diagonal, and falling in a weight range up to 14 kg the 4 fixing holes will be positioned: 75 x 75 mm or 100 x 100 mm apart in a square.

  • For medium screens from 23" to 30.9" diagonally and with a  weight range of up to 23.7 kgs the 4 fixings holes will be positioned:  200mm x 100mm or 200mm x 200mm

  • For large Plasma screens and LCD TV displays 31" to 90" diagonal, but weighing no more than 113Kg  there are various hole patterns in 200 mm increments that the TV manufacturers can use:: 400mm x 200mm, or 600mm x 400mm, or 800mm x 400mm.

Irrespective of which VESA standard is used there will be X 4 (four) pre-threaded holes on the back of your TV (in a square or rectangle) that comply with one of the VESA specifications illustrated above.

With every TV bracket sold by AVNow there will be a pack of fixing bolts that cover all of the various gauge of fixing holes on the back of your TV.

So, when you buy a TV that meets the VESA specifications and you then buy a Bracket that also meets the same VESA specification you can be absolutely confident that the two are designed to work with each other - the bracket will fit/align to the holes and the bolts supplied will fit the holes also.

The benefit of buying a TV that meets the VESA specification is that you will typically have a wider choice of brackets to chose from - this is particularly true for 32" Plasma/LCD TV's where a VESA fixing of 200x100mm or 200x200 will assure you of the widest choice of brackets but, some TV manufacturers of 32" Screens have gone with their own (Non-VESA) fitting positions. e.g. 120x180mm (Some JVC 32" TV's) or  340x120mm (Some early Panasonic 32 " TV's)

At AVNow all of our brackets conform to the VESA specifications and many support LCD & Plasma TV's with non-VESA fixings. The best way to find our what wall bracket will fit your TV is to use our easy to use bracket finder tool on our home page - simply key in your TV's model number and we'll show you which brackets meet the fixing holes on the back of your TV - simple as that!
