In any case of using a TV mount to fix a flat screen TV to a wall, it is always preferable to mount your screen onto an external or brick-built internal wall. An external brick wall will always be your best bet and as long as there are no problems with damp or any subsidence issues, almost anyone's brick wall will bare the load of almost any TV mount and screen.

Contrary to many myths, fixing a TV mount and screen to a plaster wall is often possible but can be trickier and some extra care is needed. When fixing a TV mount to a plaster wall, the most important thing to do is to try and find the timbers lying behind the plaster board. Now there is no need to get worried. This is not as difficult as it sounds and anyone can do this. You simply need to buy a "stud finder"; these are available in all the usual DIY outlets and can be bought for as little as £10. You simply move this small device over your wall and it will beep and/or flash when above the studs. If you can't find the stud frame or it is not in a suitable mounting position, it is often possible to mount directly onto the plasterboard, however should you choose to do this it is highly advisable that you use a universal TV bracket that will fix your screen flat to the wall. Do not fix cantilever or "pull-out" TV brackets to plasterboard walls - They will not hold and should only be mounted to stud frames or solid brick walls. Choose a TV mount with a large back plate that spreads the weight over multiple screw fixings as this will distribute the load over a larger area. It is critical that when fixing a TV mount to a plaster board wall, you use screws that are specifically designed for plasterboard. You will also need a suitable drill bit and fixings - ask you local DIY store for advice. From personal experience we've often found that steel butterfly screws are a good choice. Lastly and most importantly, if you are not confident about putting up your TV mount on your own, seek advice from a professional installer.
